All hell breaks loose when the local council of a small regional community (manipulated by a powerful and wealthy developer) learn that the State Government are sending in a Crime and Corruption Inspector to have a sniff around. And he'll be arriving 'incognito'. But when a mysterious nobody is mistaken for the Inspector, the town will never be the same.

Terri Brabon OAM's new adaptation of Russian playwright Nikolai Gogol's modern classic comedy.

The Government Inspector, sometimes translated to The Inspector General was originally published and performed in 1836, and mercilessly lampoons the corrupt officials of an obscure provincial town that is portrayed as a microcosm of the Russian state. Artistic Director of Theatre iNQ in Queensland, Terri Brabon OAM, has set her version in outback Australia, and her play makes references to real cases of corruption that have occurred in Queensland.

We thank Terri for allowing us to share her riotous new adaptation.

Review by Larry Waller

Blackwood Players Inc reimagine Gogol’s The Government Inspector, shifting the action from 19th-century Russia to an Australian outback town brimming with small-town politics, local corruption, and community quirks that will ring undeniably true to regional audiences. Terri Brabon’s adaptation proves how a classic text can be reborn in a distinctly Australian context — retaining its satirical bite while speaking directly to contemporary experience. Imperial bureaucracy is replaced by small-town power plays and property development; the humour becomes sharper, more colloquial, and culturally specific. Witty local references and Australian idioms give the satire a fresh edge. One standout line: “Corruption is like COVID. Nobody wants it. We all know it’s bad but we’ve learned to live with it.”
